Sarah Silverman has made comments at Christmas about Jesus’ sexuality. On one of the holiest days for Christianity, the “I Smile Back” star took to Twitter to pronounce, “MERRY CHRISTMAS! Jesus was gender fluid!” (The term refers to a person’s gender identity being in flux over time, which could include identifying oneself as male, female or neutral at different points.)
She followed up with a tweet joking about the pubic hair styles of Santa Claus. By bringing up Christianity’s son of God, Silverman, 45, immediately proved many critics were not willing to turn the other cheek.
She famously recorded a Christmas parody song in 2005 titled “Give the Girl Toys,” and posted a 2014 video in which she discusses abortion rights with an actor playing Jesus. But in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine last year, Silverman stressed she is not anti-Christian.
“I love the symbol of Jesus,” she told the magazine at the time. “It’s so odd to me that so many people on the far right use his name to justify terrible things that I can’t imagine he’d approve of.”
